Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a photo session?

It’s simple! Just drop me a few lines via the contact page. Include any questions you may have and the type of session you are looking for. Once you decide to book we can discuss dates that work for you. I will respond promptly and that will be the start of a wonderful relationship. :-) I look forward to working with you.

What happens after my session is booked?

Once you have secured your session and payed your deposit a consultation will be completed in person or via phone so that we have an understanding of what you are looking for in your photo session. We will work as a team to make the vision for your photo session come to life.  I am here to guide you through the entire process from start to finish.

How long does a session last?

Typically sessions are a minimum of 1hr and can be up to 2hrs. Times may vary depending on the session. Newborn sessions can especially vary depending on the sleep pattern of the child and many other factors. I understand that with children patience is key. :-)

What happens in cases of inclement weather?

We can’t predict how the weather will be when your session date is booked, unfortunately. However, if I foresee rain, hail, sleet or snow I will contact you as soon as possible to reschedule your session on the next mutually agreed upon date. Weather impacts natural light photography greatly and we want optimal weather conditions for your photo session.

What if I need to reschedule my session?

Things happen and life can tend to get hectic at times. I understand that unforeseen events can occur. For this reason I will allow you to voluntarily reschedule your session 1 time if needed.  We will then agree on the next mutually agreed upon date. Please let me know as soon as possible if you feel you will have to reschedule (48hrs).

What is the best time of day for my photo session?

Most photographers like to schedule shoots around the golden hour.  This is typical 1-2 hours before sunrise or sunset. This is the best time of day to take photographs because it tends to render the most flattering light. This time of day changes throughout the year. This does not mean that we can’t schedule a session at any other time of day. We will just have to be more creative in the location we choose to hold your session. However, I tend to suggest sessions be held during the golden hour.

What should I wear?

I suggest that my clients keep it simple and wear clothes that are comfortable and represent your personality and who you are. When you aren’t comfortable in what you are wearing it can translate in your photographs. Avoid logos and very busy patterns. I feel that layers and textures photograph well. When photographing families, couples, or groups coordinating colors work well.

Taking some time to put together what you want to wear for your shoot is well worth it. When you look good, you feel good, and this will be evident in your photographs. On the day of your shoot I want you to relax and enjoy your photography experience.  Have fun, and leave the rest up to me.  I want your session to be effortless.  If you have any questions about what you should wear you can always contact me to get suggestions and pointers. We are a team, and we will work together to make your vision for your photo session come to life. We want your photo session to be unique and tailored for you and what you are looking for.

How should I prepare for the day of my session?

Never come to a photo shoot hungry! It sounds funny, but its so true. When you are hungry you can’t think of anything else but food, you can be cranky, you can’t relax, and you want to rush through the shoot.  No bueno, when you want great photos! When photographing children this is especially true.

Make sure your child has taken a nap to ensure he/she will be in a good mood for their photos. Bring a stuffed animal, favorite toy, drink, snack, a change of clothes or a few clothing options. This will all make for a more positive and pleasurable experience. I also to tend to bring my own bag of surprises to keep children engaged and relaxed. Children photograph better when they are NOT prompted to sit still and look at the camera. Kids just want to be kids, so I let them.

Where will the photos be taken? Do you have a studio?

There are locations that I frequently take photos in the DMV area that are chosen based on the type and feel of the photo session that is desired.  I prefer to use natural light (sun light) in my photo sessions.  Natural light is the best light for stunning photographs. Natural light can be available in indoor settings as well i.e a big open window.  A natural light photo shoot does not necessarily have to be outdoors. We can arrange an indoor or outdoor session based on weather or other circumstances. Just let me know your preferences and we can work together to make your vision happen and decide on the perfect location. Travel fees may apply depending on the distance of a desired location. Newborn photo sessions are almost always done in doors.

When will I receive my photos?

You will receive your photos approximately 3 weeks after your session.  If you need your photos sooner, just let me know, but there may be a rush fee associated with expedited images.

Are there any additional charges associated with my photo session?

I charge a one-time flat rate for your pictures. The price quoted includes the photo shoot, your personalized gallery that can be download and contains all of your images with permission/rights for you to share and print the photos from anywhere and keep indefinitely.  If you decide to hold a photo session at a location that is associate with an additional charge, the fee associated with that facility will be added to the agreed upon price for your photo session. Travel fees may also apply depending on the distance of a desired location.

Do you deliver every image you shoot?

I don't deliver every single image from a shoot to my clients. I only deliver the best images. When shooting there can be images that are unflattering or awkward, out of focus, have distracting details, etc. There are a number of reasons to render an image unusable. When you book a session with Amber Iris Photo you are entrusting the creative control of the photographer. I take my time to comb through the images from your session and spend time meticulously editing your images to perfection. You can guarantee that I will only render you the best images possible.

Do you offer prints?

Yes!  If you are interested in professional prints, photo books, or other professional products. I will be happy to create them and have them ordered from my professional printing company.  I will be happy to discuss sizes and prices in detail upon request.
