"Year of Yes" made me think about truth, how our lives can be forever changed by truth, and how facing it can allow us to grow and become our best selves. My mother would always say that, "the truth shall set you free." I'm sure we've all kept a secret that we didn't want anyone to know, and finally decided to tell the truth and noticed the freeing feeling felt when we revealed the truth. I know I have.  Sometimes we just need to simply be honest with ourselves and the people around us. We need to also be okay with the people in our corner being honest with us.  However, honesty scares us at times. We even avoid it. Somehow we think by not facing the truth we are somehow being protected. What do we lose by gaining truth?

Say Yes to "Real" People

Shonda Rhimes' life was forever changed, merely because her sister decided to be unapologetically honest with her.  Her sister simply told Shonda, "You never say yes to anything." The honesty in these few words forever changed Shonda's life. They stuck with her.  Shonda's sister is the perfect example of the type of people we need in our lives. The people who are going to call us out on our sh**.  The ones who see past our bullsh** even when we don't.  The ones who aren't going to just tell us what we WANT to hear, but tell us things we NEED to hear. We don't appreciate this all the time, but these are the people who care about us, truly love us, and want the best for us. Who do you know in your life that does exactly this? I don't know about you, but I want REAL people in my corner.

"The best stories are often true...the narrative of human life is most beautiful when told truthfully and without boundaries." -Shonda Rhimes

I admit, it has been hard for me at times to face my truths and be brutally honest about who I am, the things I need to change, where I want to be in life, and how I'm going to get there.  I had to open my eyes, ears, and most of all my heart to truth.  The people who call me out on my sh** are the ones who are there when I need them and continue to be brutally honest.  I do the same for them. We need these people on our team.  However, we have to be willing to listen. Willing to be open to honesty and realness. My life changed the moment I decided to be okay with people being  blatantly honest and real with me.  So in 2016 here are a few things I want to say yes to.

I'm Saying Yes to:

  1. Happiness

  2. Truth

  3. Growth

  4. Authenticity

  5. Believing
