How Will you Stand Out in Your Industry...Getting over Imposter Syndrome and Fear

IMG_1136.jpg

IMPOSTER SYNDROME…has it gotten the best of you? I know I’ve been met with it plenty, and still face it from time to time. One moment you feel like your are on top of the world, killing it, and have it all together, and the next moment you begin to question your worth, if you are good enough, and start comparing yourself to others in your industry.  We can be our own worst critics when it comes to our dreams and the things we are pursuing. Its become apparent that when you take a leap to grow, evolve, level up, or just follow your dreams, negative thoughts creep in and try to throw you off track.  It’s hard to not to think about failure, mistakes, and being judged, wondering about what others may think, and the list goes on.

Comparison is a big one, especially with the big presence of social media…you are just one scroll away from being caught in the comparison trap. I try not to compare myself to others in my industry. Instead I try to allow others to inspire me to keep going. Its hard not to feel like the industry you are in is oversaturated and that everyone is seemingly doing what you are doing. That may be true, but you have something special inside of you. You have that little something that makes you different. People may do what you do, but they won’t do it quite like you. ;-)

So how can we combat imposter syndrome? How do we get up and keep going each day? Here are some things that work for me. First, I try to stay encouraged and when fear and negative thinking try to creep in I quickly try to replace those thoughts with something positive. It also helps to have a tribe of people to hold you accountable, encourage you, inspire you, and help keep your spirts lifted. It makes a world of a difference. The people you surround yourself with matter so much. When you are trying to reach for a new level in life you have to make sure you have positivity and good energy surrounding you. Its crazy how the slightest things can throw you off track.

Another thing that has been helpful for me is self help books and consistently reading or listening to things that encourage me. Joel Osteen’s “Everyday is a Friday” is one of my faves, along with Jen Sincero’s “You are a Badass”, Elizabeth Gilbert’s “Big Magic”, Brene Brown’s “Daring Greatly”, Shonda Rhimes’ “Year of Yes”, and the list can go on.

I also keep inspirational music I heavy rotation.  I also like to listen to encouraging and inspirational podcasts. I try to find anything that is going to keep me encouraged and my spirits lifted.

I also wanted to share a few tips to encourage you to keep going on you entrepreneurial journey…

  1. JUST BE YOURSELF

Focus on being you and bringing your magic wherever you go! Be authentic. BE YOU! There may be other businesses similar to yours, that do what you do, but remember this… “No one is you, and that is your power!” No one will do it quite like you. Throw your own magic on it!

  2. BE OPEN

Share who you are in real life. Open up and share a little more about yourself. Be comfortable in your own skin. Do yourself a favor and block out thoughts about what everyone else will think of you.

  3. DO IT WITH PURPOSE AND PASSION OR NOT AT ALL

What excites you about what you do? How do you feel when you are operating in your business and doing all you desire to do? How do you feel when you are in the zone? What excites you about what you do?

  4. DO ALL THINGS WITH EXCELLENCE

Think about how you would like to be treated and the service you desire. Treat people as you would like to be treated. Sometimes the smallest thought can make an impact. What do you want your potential customer’s experience to be like?

  5. DO THE WORK

Don’t look for short cuts. Learn all you need know about your industry and always strive to get better and learn something new.
